Fuel tank sending unit?

My 94 Dakota fuel gauge has started acting up. When the tank is full gauge and needle are fine. Once the needle gets half the width down from the full mark the gauge starts bouncing radically. It again settles down and reads fine when the tank is about half full (the gauge reads just above half full) until it is about half way trough the half mark then goes crazy again. It once again settles down at the 1/4 mark until getting part way through the indicator mark on the gauge and it all begins again.

I suspect the sending unit in the tank since all other gauges operate normally. Would this be an accurate presumption?
