Air cleaner suggestion for 86 Gran Fury?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
I have disconnected and circumvented the lean burn on our 86 Gran Fury. I would like to replace the air cleaner with a pan that doesn't have the lean burn box. Car is a 318 2 barrel. Can anyone suggest a replacement? Thanks.

Tranny fluid loeak. Need suggestions for quick temporary fix

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
Granny, my 79 Aspen sedan (225 with torqueflite), is leaking a little tranny fluid-about 8 ounces a month. Seems two of the bolts holding the pan are stripped and the fluid is dripping from the bolt holes. I've exceeded my repair budget for the year and am looking for a quick cheap temporary fix. Is there any kind of sealant/caulk that I can apply as a temporary stop-gap measure? It needs to be something that can easily be removed when I get ready to have the shop redo the holes and bolts? Thanks.

Need help-Imperial won’t start, then it does

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
Hope someone can give a mechanical novice some direction. I have a 75 Imperial 440-4. Several times this last week when I try to start it, it cranks but does not start. I smell gas so the engine has flooded. When I go back 20 minutes later and try to start it, it fires up and runs fine all day. I thought with the 90 degree weather we've been having that it might be vapor lock (and I only had a 1/4 of a tank of gas in it). I filled it up yesterday thinking that might help, but this morning the same thing --no start, flood engine, 20 minutes later it starts!

Might the problem be the fuel pump? I put a new one in last summer.
How about something to do with the ballast resistor? Have had a similar problem with my kid's Scamp and a new ballast resistor did the trick.
Might it have to do with the choke?

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Rip mercury

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
Ford is phasing out the Mercury nameplate and it makes me sad. Over the past few years we've lost Plymouth, Olds, and Pontiac and now Mercury will be gone. I've generally liked Mercury styling and have owned 2-- my first car was a 51 Mercury 4-door Sportsedan that I had for about 6 months. In 1989 I bought a brand new Sable wagon that served me well.

Springtime-took the Gran Fury to the strip!

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
Finally springtime! Beautiful day in southern Ohio yesterday so my kid and I took the 86 Gran Fury out for a few time trials. Had a great time and the car ran as expected--about 11.3 on the 1/8 mile.

Interest in FMJ Meet/Show in 2011 ?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
With the university closed yesterday due to the winter wonderland, I had a lot of time to waste and came up with an idea. How much interest is there in attending a FMJ meet/show and even a little 1/8 mile drag racing in summer 2011?

I might be able to set up such an event on a Sunday at KD Dragway in South Webster, Ohio in 2011. South Webster is about 90 miles south of Columbus and 100 miles east of Cinci. Here's there website
http://www.kddragway.com/ It's a mom-and-pop strip, so don't expect a lot of amenities (They sell hot dogs, chips, and soda). Motels like Super 8 and Holiday Inn are 20 miles away.

I envision a Show and Shine with a few trophies, a short cruise through the hills of southern Ohio, and time-trial passes down the strip (Maybe an actual bracket race if there are enough registrants).

I guess the cost may be around $50 for car and driver and $7-$10 for spectators.

Please let me know if you would be inclined to come to such an event. If there is enough interest, I'll start talking with the folks at the track.
