Oil – synthetic blend versus straight mineral oil in our oldies but goodies

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Oil – synthetic blend versus straight mineral oil in our oldies but goodies
I have been running Valvoline 10w30 conventional in our slant 6s and my older (92 and 78) 318 engines for years.....

Seems now that straight 10w30 in Valvoline at least is selling at $28 for 5 quarts but the "max life synthetic blend for high mileage engines" in the same weight can be had for $17 for 5 quarts.

Any thoughts on using this? The 92 is high mileage at 125k miles....one slant 6 is in the 20k mile range (rebuilt several years back) and the other supposedly has less than 40k...

Want to go a little wider than stock…

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Want to go a little wider than stock…
So our 81 Dippy two door is equipped with the stock size wheels/hubcaps and 205 75r 15 skinny white walls.

I'd like to go wider....not necessary shorter or taller...want to keep that stuff the same so I do not need to change the odometer gear....just a little wider.

Just put brand new KYB gas adjust shocks on her and now I need to look at the tires.....two front ones need replaced ... bad idler arm and an inattentive kid driving it ended up with the inner and outer edges worn out...idler...

F body rear seatbelt mounting

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on F body rear seatbelt mounting
Well, we found that the floor around the outer rear seat belt (right side) bolt rusted out......its goofy....the metal right AROUND the plate, save for a quarter inch border, is perfect....still body color etc....that is looking at it from the wheel well too.

Does anyone know if there is any sort of patch produced for this area?

I am guessing not, so I guess the fix is either find a donor car with that area in tact , cut it out and weld it in....or build something from scratch...

Since it...

Replacing front left brake line

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Replacing front left brake line
Ugh

Brake hoses need replaced on the 81 Dippy.....left brake line snapped as predicted at the brake hose connection block.....not a huge deal since its only a 12" piece of 3/16" brake line.....have the NiCu 12" with fittings piece ordered at the store....

But the right side.....

I have the fitting broke loose, but the whole line is turning with it.....hasnt twisted yet.....

I guess the fitting is galded to the line just like the left side.

THAT brake line is a real PITA cause it goes...

Sheet metal

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Sheet metal
Anyone have any hot tips for where to buy sheet metal for auto panel repairs?

Do you recommend aluminized metal like they sell at Eastwood?

Their kits are $40-50 for (it seems to me) not a lot of sheet metal. But it is aluminized....worth it?

Old cars used to be 18 gauge but will the now common 20 gauge work for repairs/welding in?

Alternator cinch bolt size?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Alternator cinch bolt size?
Kiddo stripped out his alternator cinch-down bolt....or the threads let go in his aftermarket alternator...not sure....

Anyone know the stock sized bolt for cinching the alt in place (not the pivot bolt, the lock down bolt)?

I am thinking we can use a threadsert kit sized for the stock sized bolt....

Accelerator pump on BBD carb problems

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Accelerator pump on BBD carb problems
Hey all..need some help ASAP
My son found the accelerator pump on our 2 BBL BBD carb (1980 Volare slant 6) "fold over" on itself about a year ago.....so he replaced it with one from a kit.....its red with a green cup.....just like the one that was in it. The carb had done well up til then, started stumbling off the line......the new acc pump fixed that.
Well, after it started stumbling again, he found it has once again "folded" on itself so he bought a new kit and replaced it.......worked...
