Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

BRAINERD, Minn. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 30th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 7.356/92.87, Now #1

3:23 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 28.64 inches, adjusted altitude 3,062 feet.

We are sitting atop the left-side bleachers here and cannot see the track temperature sign, but the track should not be a problem because we have hd light cloud cover for the past couple hours.
Creasy had a clean launch, with a 0.923 60-foot time, but began to rattle and then smoke the tires about 100 feet out.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 5.507/131.01, Now #2
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 5.148/161.02, Now #1

Both cars made clean launches and both appeared to be on pretty good runs, then both lost traction about 300 feet out.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.150/150.41, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 6.266/105.38, Now #4

Pretty much the same story, Lee out of the throttle after losing traction about 300 feet out, Head getting a little further before suffering the same fate.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.112/149.46, Now #1
Right Lane: Johnny Gray No Time, Now #7

Gray's car flamed out at the end of his burnout. He got out and over the wall so Pedregon could run. Pedregon made a solid run to about 400 feet, then the rear tires started spinning and he shut it off.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.192/295.21, Now #1
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.056/152.24, Now #2

Wilkerson also got about 400 feet before having problems, but Tasca appeared to be under power all the way through, with no major problems, giving us our first "four" of the weekend.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.122/146.70, Now #5
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.581/231.79, Now #2

These two made their burnouts, pulled up to stage...and no stage lights. Apparently the vibration of the fuel cars shook a connector loose on the tree.

The crews shut off the fuel supplies and Arend's engine shut down quickly, but Force's kept surging, almost stopping, then revving up again. It finally ran out of fuel and the teams had to figure out whether to 'fuel and refire," or reservice the engines.
Both elected to add some fuel, back the engines off, and try again.
Both cars fired up with no problems and the drivers moved in to stage again. Like many before them, both lost traction about 400 feet out. Arend shut off, but Force got out of the throttle, then got back on, trying to get a bonus point or two. At the least, he will get to run later in the second session.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.150/293.66, Now #1
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.599/183.49, Now #4

Tim Richards has it figured out, Capps' car went through the problem area with no visible problems. Hagan was not as fortunate, he joined the growing list of those losing traction about 400 feet out.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.242/272.67, Now #3
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.845/176.63, Now #6

pedregon bumped Force from the final bonus points position with a good run, with an early shutoff. Beckman started hazing the tries about 400 feet out (where have we heard that before?).

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 7.305/88.86, Now #15
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.885/167.20, Now #7

Last pair. They need to beat Capps' 4.150 for #1, Cruz Pedregon's 4.242 for a bonus point.

Nope. Hight lost traction about 200 feet out, Neff lost traction about 400 feet out.
After one session, only Capps and Tasca came close to making full passes.

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 7.634/102.90, Now #2
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 5.182/147.02, Now #1

2:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 60 percent, barometer 29.76 inches, adjusted altitude 1,477 feet, track temperature 88 degrees. The weather has stayed very consistent today with just a few feet of air density and track temperature.

Eighteen cars are entered.

It's fire and fall back for both drivers. Haddock has a softer leave, but shakes and spins right away and clicks it off.

Diehl gets out to near the 330 lights before having to lift.

Both cars slowly coast to the turnout.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 7.361/99.11, Now #2
Right Lane: Brian Thiel No Time, Now #4

Densham's tune up was stronger than Thiel's off the line and it costs him as the engine goes silent after shake and spin early in the run.

Thiel was on a good looking pass until the left bank header flames started to pulse up and down after the 660 lights. The Charger made a hard move towards the center line with dropped cylinders to finish the pass. He keeps it in his lane and then has a header fire after stopping the car on the track and quickly opening the body up. It's a Official oil down penality and his time won't count.

2:32 P.M. Time out for cleanup after the lights.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.950/206.73, Now #1
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 7.839/76.42, Now #5

2:45 p.m. Just a small quick cleanup.

No joy here, as both cars are up in smoke by the 330 lights, after tow fair leaves. Lee is done at that point, but Troxel nails the throttle again and then lifts.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 7.411/89.94, Now #5
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 5.435/133.26, Now #3

Pedregon is flying a neat green Charter Communications wrap this weekend.

They leave close together and have similar sixtyfoot times. Pedregon is in trouble first before the 330 lights and then Gray's Service Central Charger starts to spin the tires shortly after that..

There is oil on the track in Gray's lane, but he still has a "Get Out of Jail Free" card and keeps his ET and MPH.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.205/298.87, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 7.597/77.20, Now #7

Wilkerson had time to make changes after watching the early broken passes and thunders right on down the track and into the top spot with out first four second pass of the session.

Tasca's Mustang has slower incremental numbers, but can't get to the 330 lights under power.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.365, 660ft-3.386/253.61 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 8.056/77.50, Now #11
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.124/304.87, Now #1

Arend missed getting into the seventeen car field last weekend and is looking for revenge.

Force was the number one qualifier and looks to be ensuring a repeat with a great looking pass right up to the top of the ladder. Good incrementals to work from in session two.

Arend is in trouble again with the tires smoking hard near the sixty foot lights. John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.328, 660ft-3.324/260.51 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 7.328/88.71, Now #7
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 7.258/87.61, Now #6

The team mates leave together, smoke the tires together, and shut off together. All before the 330 lights. Paul Lee is on the bump spot at 7.839.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 6.674/110.42, Now #6
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 7.690/86.00, Now #13

Two more failed passes. Just too much power for the track. Only two cars have got much past the 330 lights so far.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 7.469/86.54, Now #12
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.877/154.90, Now #3

Terry Haddock is on the bump spot at 7.634.

Let's see if Guido's John Force tune up will get utilized for these two.

Not so much! Height has similar initial number, but is all done before the 330 lights. Neff gets to near the 660 mark and engine goes BANG with both chutes immediately deploying. Even coasting on to the 1000 foot lights, Neff will still take over the number three qualifying position.

3:15 p.m. John Force is number one at 4.124 and Robert Hight is on the bump spot at 7.469.
