Small Block Piston Troubles?
Posted by: | CommentsI am assembling a 360 motor. .030 over bore.
I am using KB362 pistons and eagle SIR floating rods.
I keep reading about how some pistons require the additional clearance of a 1" wide piston end.
I've assembled the bottom end of the motor and I don't see any interferance. How much clearance does there need to be between the piston and the rod?
Am I in trouble? I'll feel like (and be, probably) an idiot if I am (I even had everything balanced...)

NEW computer after 13 years…
Posted by: | CommentsFinally pulled the trigger on a decent NEW computer last night.
Looked for a decent workstation to run CAD (Solidworks mostly and Pro/E) as my laptop (Dell Precision M70) is getting long in the tooth (7 years old) and has never really liked resource heavy applications all that much (but has run them).
I had an OLD Dell Precision 620 (dual 1.8 Xeons) that my parents still like (runs win2k though). I was looking at used Dell 670s, 690s, and the next was T5400s. But as I looked at the prices going (for USED) I figured I could get a nice NEW one for about the same price.
So I did.
Dell - Studio XPS Desktop / Intel® Core™ i5 Processor / 6GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive - X8300-197NBK
I never thought I'd need a TerraByte hard drive until I started loading all my CDs into iTunes last week. The 40GB drive on this computer is getting full...
oh, and digital edition DVDs.... OMG those take up some space each too!
Good thing I've got a 160GB portable hard drive...
Oh, and its an educational expense so I get to claim it on my taxes! YAY! (CAD and Chem Classes this semester!, and More CAD to come!!!)
I guess I'm excited... Going to be about 2 weeks to get everything in (monitor, keyboard, etc). I guess the CD collection will be done by then!

Narrowing the Pin end of Connecting Rods.
Posted by: | CommentsHow hard is it?
Just about ready to pull the trigger on some Eagle SIR rods to go with my KB362 pistons. The one caveat is that the rods need to be narrowed to Magnum width (1"). This is for my 360 I'm building.
The stock width of the pin end is 1.060" What's the accepted width on a magnum engine? Is the dimension 1.000"? And I should probably take equal amounts off of each side.
I know I can do this myself (access to a full machine shop and able to do it), but there are just a few questions before I'm confident in doing it myself.

360 head and cam selection
Posted by: | CommentsOk, I'm working on my 360 on paper, and am getting some things in order.
Right now this is what I have:
75 360
.030 over KB107s ~9.5" compression
Eddy Air Gap
Holley 670
68-70 340 manifolds and a 2.5" dual exhaust
I'm really torn between head selection as I'd like to get new assemblies, so I'm thinking the Indy AeroHeads, but after some searching, of course, there are some less than favorable reviews. If I AM going to get them, then I'll be getting their 915-587 kit with 2.02/1.60s (or put simply, these are the ones I'm seriously considering)
And of course, the heart of the combo, the camshaft. I'm thinking something along the lines of a Comp Cams xe268h
Rest of the car is a slightly lightened 71 Challenger
904 with 318 converter
3.23 SG
26" tall tires
I'm sure I could probably gain some power band usage with a different converter, but there's another area I'm really a novice about.
Any ideas, comments are appreciated.
I expect the engine to live in the 2000-6000 RPM window as it will see lots of driving duty to and from Autocrosses, but will probably trailer it to track days. (Lime Rock hopefully FINALLY this year)
***edit***
Yeah, I'm doing this on a budget, so keep that in mind. This is probably it for me spending money on the car this year except maybe for a new set of tires. While I'd love Edelbrock heads, that's completely out of question this year *sigh*

What to do with old High School Sports jackets?
Posted by: | CommentsWell, I've been going through clothing and stuff recently in my move from my parents into with my girlfriend.
I have a few old jackets I got when I was Varsity in Track / Cross Country when we won our district championships (& 1 State Championship!)
The question comes, what should I do with them? I've kept all the letters from the sports banquets, but I have 4 jackets (to be precise, 1 sweatshirt, 1 hooded sweatshirt, 1 fleece vest, and 1 windbreaker) that I know I'm not going to wear again. I'd hate to throw em out, but I really don't have any interest in wearing them again (I think I wore them last in freshman year in college). So they've been hanging for about 12 years now...

Late B/R good front shocks!
Posted by: | Commentsjust found this on the net from a guy who built an R-body track car :
To let you all know, that's the front shock spec'd out for a 68-72 GM A-body (Chevelle, Cutlass, Skylark, El Camino)

I have a ton of miles on this set up with no issues. I did test fit them without the torsion bars installed to ensure compatibility. All you need to do is install a shock bolt sleeve in the bottom bushing and at the top shorten the lower bushing - see pic. |

May be buying a NEW R/T
Posted by: | CommentsTook an SE and an R/T 6spd on a test drive today.
Trading in my 01 Ram, they are being generous on the trade... The deal breaker is what they'll value my 71 Challenger at...
Kinda scary, but would be nice not to have to work on my car EVERY chance I get...
Its just a base R/T, Hemi Orange, 6 speed. That's it for the options... LOL
